Baku is the capital city of Azerbaijan, located on the Caspian Sea. The population of Baku is 1,873,600 people (2007), the area of Baku is 2200 sq.km. The city is divided into 11 districts and consist of 5 townships. The historical city center is the fortress Inner city (or Inner Town), located on the southern slope of the Baku plateau. The amplitude of the heights are from 28 m below sea level to 100-250 m above sea level. To the west of Baku there are 2 mountain peaks (400 m each), which are called ‘Gates of Baku’. Ganja, Azerbaijan
Ganja is a city in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the second in terms of population after Baku. Located at the north-eastern foot of the Lesser Caucasus, on the river Ganjachay. Ganja is a center of historical area named Arran. According to the anonymous Stories of Derbent, Ganja was founded in 859. Ganja was established as a settlement due to its favorable geographical location at the crossroads of ancient caravan routes. In 1804-1918 the city has been renamed as Elizavetpol, but in 1918-1935 the name Ganja was restored. Still, in 1935-1989 Ganja was renamed again as Kirovabad. In 1989 the city has restored it’s original name Ganja and it remained so till today. In Soviet times Ganja (that time known as Kirovabad) became the second industrial and cultural center of Azerbaijan after Baku.
Shaki, Azerbaijan
Shaki, one of the oldest cities in the Caucasus, is situated at an altitude of 500-850 meters above sea level. Such a high position, as well as mountain forests around the city area prevent Shaki from excessive heating. Mountain forests also help to protect the city from floods, as well as decorate the city view. The forests are mostly of beech and walnut trees. Shaki and its area is especially famous for ancient monuments. The city has a small silk industry, but the main income is produced by Shaki agricultural sector. Mostly this sector is presented by grapes, tobacco, different kinds of nuts, cereals. Also it can be cattle and milk industry.
