There have been 370 hotels and guest houses (tourist camps, hostels, sanatoriums, recreation centers, motels) operating in Azerbaijan last year. 43 properties was not functioning for some reasons according to State Statistics Committee.

56 out of all functioning hotels in Azerbaijan are the state property. Statistics Committee relegates to them sanatoriums and recreation centers owned by Trade Union Confederation. 296 hotels are owned by local companies or individuals, 12 by foreign investors and 6 are a joint ventures.

All Azerbaijan hotels with 12 789 rooms in total can accommodate 28,2 thousands customers at the same time. Out of this number 4228 (33%) rooms are owned by the state, 7 393 (57,8%) by private business, 717 (5,6%) are the property of foreign investors, and joint ventures possess - 451 (3,5%).

Altogether Luxe rooms in Azerbaijan hotels have a share of 15,6%, first category rooms - 47,4%, tourist level rooms - 37%.

79 Baku hotels had 4563 rooms in total last year. Hotels in Baku can accommodate at the same time 8285 guests. Interestingly, 53% of all Luxe rooms in Azerbaijan hotels are in Baku.

According to official statistics, at the peak of tourist season in 2008 the number of used rooms reached 7908 or 60% of total number of hotel rooms in Azerbaijan. Maximum occupancy rate was 61% or 17.4 room numbers. Baku hotels had these numbers as 75.3% and 80,8% accordingly.

Khachmas region is leading with the number of hotels: 36 hotels and recreation zones. Hotels of this region have in total 1550 rooms with 4400 beds. According to their statistics 1053 rooms were used and accommodated 3287 guests at the peak of tourist season last year.

Just for the last year hotels in Azerbaijan provided services to 431.5 thousands guests. 48% out of them were Azerbaijan citizens. 45 thousands were guests from CIS countries and 179 thousands are citizens of other countries. Baku hotels accommodated 253 thousands guests or 58%. On average customers stay in Azerbaijan hotels for 3 nights. Foreign guests spent 556 thousands nights in Azerbaijan nights for the last year.

According to Committee 142.2 thousands foreign tourists visited Azerbaijan for tourist purposes, another 24.5 came for therapeutic potential of Azerbaijan. 140.4 had been in Azerbaijan for business trips and the rest 124.3 thousands foreigners arrived to Azerbaijan with other purposes.

Azerbaijan hotels provided services to 34.2 thousands of Russia citizens, 50.9 thousands of British citizens, 21,8 thousands of Turkish passport-holders,  12.7 thousands USA citizens, 10.6 thousands Iranians, 4.2 thousands Chinese, 9.4 thousands Libyan citizens and 3.8 thousands of Ukrainians.

Total income of Azerbaijan hotels in 2008 was 98.58 ml. AZN (around 100 ml. Euros). Around 66.7 ml. AZN (67.6%) in revenues came from room sale, 20.6 ml (20,8%) from food & beverages, 6.4 ml from other services. Most of income was made by hotels owned by local companies and individuals - 43.88 ml. (44.5%), hotels owned by foreign investors earned 41.23 ml. (41,8%), joint venture hotels took a third place and earned - 10 ml. (10,2%). Much less was earned by hotels in state property - only 3.4 ml. (3.4%).

To make those earnings hotels invested 91.7 ml. AZN. Taxes paid by hotels in Azerbaijan totalled 14 millions. In this case state hotels had losses of 0.9 ml. manats. According to reports hotels of local investors earned their owners a net profit of 4.6 ml. AZN. Foreign owners earned 1.2 ml. and joint ventures - 1.87 ml. AZN.

It has to be emphasised that 87.5% за total profit was earned by Baku hotels. In total profit of hotels in Baku was 6.1 ml. AZN. For comparison, income of hotels in Khachmas region that was the mostly visited by tourists in 2008 was just 3 ml. out of which 2,87 ml. were expenses.

Total square of hotels and guesthouses in Azerbaijan is 1 121.2 sq. m. with 50% or 565.000 sq. m. in Baku hotels.
There are 5.6 thousands people working in Azerbaijan hotels, 3.3 thousands directly involved in servicing tourists. Baku hotels has a staff of 3330 persons. Total salaries of employees of all hotels in Azerbaijan for the whole last year was 12.89 ml. AZN with 11 millions (85%) paid to staff in Baku hotels.

Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan also reports that 59 new hotels & guesthouses are under construction in Baku.
