Azerbaijan travel still grow

Despite serious financial problems in global economy in 2008 a number of foreign tourists that visited Azerbaijan had grown 39,4% comparing to year 2007 and exceeded 1,4 million, informed Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Abulfaz Garayev. 

Mentioning the high growth in tourist sector of Azerbaijan the minister noted that there are 230 travel companies operating in Azerbaijan, 370 hotels and guest houses, that is 16,9% more than in 2007. Another 35 hotels are under construction in Azerbaijan.

Speaking about progress in development of ‘Shahdag’ summer-winter tourist complex in Qusar region minister said that 3 years work on architectural planning, engineering works, climate researches and geological test are now finished. A number of foreign companies were involved in the process including companies from Austria, Germany and Sweden. Within a period of 2009-2011 there will be a new hotel constructed along with tourist settlement, two mountain lifts, eight winding plants, equipment to produce artificial snow, new roads laid and infrastructure erected. Project works to lay communication lines has already started.

Mr. Garayev has also mentioned that to promote the tourist potential of Azerbaijan the Ministry participated in 7 international tourists fairs in first quarter of 2009. Azerbaijan tourist potential was also advertised on CNN and "EuroNews" channels.
