Azcot Guest House Baku, Azerbaijan
Located in the heart of business area on famous Fountain Square Azcot is a clean and reasonably priced hotel with a friendly staff and is the best starting point to discover the downtown of Baku. In general Azcot Hotel offers comfortable, value-for-money accommodation for both travelers on a budget and corporate guests looking for a competitively-priced room in the very heart of Baku.
Central location allows easy access to restaurants, bazaars, souvenir shops selling Persian miniatures and fine carpets at attractive prices, grocery shops selling beluga caviar jars. The hotel is near Baku's waterfront where you can take a boat ride on the Caspian sea or go to Icheri Sheher (Old City) which is a UNESCO world heritage site, and get lost in the wandering streets and old architecture. Azcot lets you do it all on foot, and escape from the hermetically sealed western cocoon of the Hyatt Regency. So if you have a business in downtown area and do not want to deal with traffic Azcot might be your ideal choice.
Azcot Guest House has 34 rooms, including 1 mini suite, 4 junior suites and 1 twin. The rooms are quite basic, but clean and functional. High ceilings, pine wood floors, bowl-lamps attach a modern feeling to the rooms. The furnishing is a combination of IKEA and cheap electronics, but for the price and location this is a real value-for-money.
The rooms are cleaned daily and the laundry is daily .... including the weekends. So, to some extent it beats The Hyatt.
Hotel's interior is characterized by nature oil paintings, large Chinese vases and antique-style ornaments in sitting areas, reminding Victorian English clubs for gentlemen. The hotel occupies a fine stone mansion that was built in 1885 by one of the oil barons. At the time it was one of Baku's biggest and grandest buildings. There are some historical photos on walls from that era that are worth paying attention.
Small dining room is on 4th-floor.
Junior Suites are a one bedroom apartment with very bright living room.
Mini Suite is located on the 4th floor. Spacious suite with magnificent view over Old City consists of bedroom and living room. Mini suites are overlooking Fountain square.
Many visitors note that Hotel tends to cater more for British guests (thanks to BP oil workers). Strangely enough three pin square electrical sockets are everywhere as in UK - so for all the Europeans from continent ... bring your plug converters. Another thing is breakfast, which is typically British (perfect English fry up, with diagonally sliced toast, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, and pork sausage, all carefully organised on the plate, with a ketchup bottle thoughtfully provided, just like in a down market British motorway cafe, designed to make itinerant British oil workers feel at home.) with some guests assuring that it was the best English breakfast they ever had outside London. But Azeri style breakfast alternative is worth trying too, you won't be disappointed.
If you rely on Internet for day to day business, need Skype or would like to entertain yourself with YouTube you maybe a little frustrated as the speeds can be slow. But for checking e-mail it is fine. Perhaps they will upgrade it soon.
