The location of The Ambassador Hotel is not the best as it is around 5 km out of Baku city centre and is away for anything that the tourist or business traveler might need. No decent cafes, restaurants or shops anywhere nearby. So in terms of location it is inconvenient to downtown Baku, unless you are very familiar with this part of the city. It is also difficult to find and this is also not the pretties part of the city. Being about 5kms out of town it's not convenient for anything: no cafes, restaurants or decent shops anywhere nearby. 15 min driving distance from the city centre if the traffic is light, which is in fact happens very rarely.
It might be just useful for those who attend some exhibition that are traditionally held in Heydar Aliyev Sport Complex - the traditional venue for international exhibitions and fairs. But still you would need to have a 10 minute ride to get there. Nearly the same distance would be to Tofik Bakhramov Stadium, which is currently used mostly for football matches. It serves as a home ground of FK Baku, Neftchi Baku, and the Azerbaijan national football team. Could be useful for international football fans who visit Baku to watch football matches. The nearest tube stations are either Ganjlik or 20 Yanvar, reachable by bus (15 minutes).
This hotel claims to be a 5 stars hotel and the room pricing is in relation with the number of stars. But in reality it can hardly get even 3* of European standard. Guests have to be aware that SOME OF THE ROOMS HAVE NO WINDOWS! Imagine that in 5* hotel.
The Ambassador Hotel has 58 standard and suite rooms, quite spacious, equipped with either a king-size or twin beds, each room has one or two-seaters sofa. All rooms have individually controlled air conditioning, high-speed Internet access, cable TV with international channels (among worth watching English channels are only BBC World and CNN - not much else!), safe and mini-bar. Only 17 inches LCD TV. Bathrooms has a Jacuzzi, bidet and bathrobes. The rooms are simply decorated and overall the beds are very comfortable. The rooms are cleaned promptly and fresh supplies are brought in daily. Rooms are spacious and the furniture is old fashioned but in mint conditions.
The room keycard situation is a nightmare. If you have 2 guests in the room, one key resets the other. Also the housekeeping master key will reset all the keys, so you are constantly having to go down to the front desk to have them fixed. The front desk issues you new key without problem, but it is just frustrating.
The front desk speaks decent English and is always friendly. Unfortunately all other staff are mostly junior, without training, with poor command of English. Hence poor management, added to an outdated architecture with unmaintained equipement, funny decoration, and substandard service.
Breakfast is fine but hardly in line with five star hotel standards that The Ambassador Hotel claims to be. The dinning room is decently decorated, although at several of the breakfast buffets you must ask for more plates, juice, coffee, cups, spoons. They run out of everything and do not bother to restock unless you ask and then wait. The staff is not trained enough, waiters do not know the menu, do not speak any English and the menu content is close to the fast food menu. There is a lovely restaurant 30m down the street, better head there.
A range of additional hotel facilities include large conference room, in-door swimming pool, fitness center and a round the clock concierge.
Colonnade Restaurant
Operating from early morning to late evening Colonnade restaurant offers a wide selection of dishes from National and International cuisine.
Volume Lobby Bar
Relaxing bar with deep comfortable leather sofas and armchairs. Good selection of cocktails, soft music.
6th Avenue Roof Bar
Open till late roof bar is quite a nice place to have a light snack along with a good selection of beers and spirits. Relaxed atmosphere. Big screen with Premier League games and billiard is available.
Concluding, Ambassador is certainly not a 5-star hotel. It has decent rooms and that's rather all. Location is bad. Service is mediocre. They have seriously reduced the rates recently to match the service and now it is worth consideration.
