Located in the heart of business area on famous Fountain Square Azcot is a clean and reasonably priced hotel with a friendly staff and is the best starting point to discover the downtown of Baku. The location is central indeed and bordering one of Baku's beautiful squares - Fountain Square with its large choice of restaurants within a few minutes walk. The Azcot Hotel is located at the end of a street, which continues as a pedestrian walkway in the Fountain Square. The hotel is L shaped – one side facing the street ( this is the old wing ), while the other side is facing the Fountain Square. Further down, you will get to the Caspian sea – probably another 10 minutes walk from the Fountain Square. The seaside has been transformed to become another centre of attraction. Most of the new 5 star hotels eg Hyatt, Four Seasons, Hilton are located along this area. Nearby the hotel, there are also plenty of eateries – McDonalds is located in Fountain Square, other types of restaurants and cafes are abundant serving varieties of food – local Azeri, Turkish, Indian, pizzas etc. No problem in getting food. In the other direction, you can get to the Old City – the original centre in the old ages
Azcot Hotel has 34 rooms, including 1 mini suite, 4 junior suites and several twins. The rooms are quite basic, but clean and functional. High ceilings, pine wood floors, bowl-lamps attach a modern feeling to the rooms. The furnishing is a combination of IKEA and cheap electronics, but for the price and location this is a real value-for-money. Everywhere is a heavy brown furniture. The rooms, though large, might be found characterless. The rooms facing the street are more traditional – its ambience, furniture and arrangements are not of the modern era. The rooms here come with wood flooring and local carpets are placed on the floor. The bathroom is large with a bathtub. The rooms which are facing the Fountain Square are more modern – with carpeted flooring all rounds. This wing was recently (late 2012) refurbished. However, there is no bathtub, only shower room. All rooms come with an aircond, heater, satellite TV, fridge etc. Internet is via Wi-Fi which costs 2 AZN/per day.
There is also a common place outside some the rooms, with a set of sofas and tables. Useful if you are travelling in a group where you can sit and have a discussion or chatting to each other. This is not available in most of the newer hotels where the corridor to the rooms would just be a boring walkway with walls and rooms’ doors on each side.
The rooms are cleaned daily and the laundry is daily .... including the weekends. So, to some extent it beats The Hyatt.
Hotel's interior is characterized by nature oil paintings, large Chinese vases and antique-style ornaments in sitting areas, reminding Victorian English clubs for gentlemen. The hotel occupies a fine stone mansion that was built in 1885 by one of the oil barons. At the time it was one of Baku's biggest and grandest buildings. There are some historical photos on walls from that era that are worth paying attention.
The hotel has a curious arrangement of a breakfast room and kitchen on each floor. Breakfast is served in a hall, with 8 – 10 tables, each for 6 pax. This served a buffet style meal with basic cereal, coffee, tea, butter and jams, cheese, fruits, juices and yoghurt. You can also order continental breakfast from the menu. It will be freshly prepared and brought over to you. Small dining room is on 4th-floor.
Junior Suites are a one bedroom apartment with very bright living room.
Mini Suite is located on the 4th floor. Spacious suite with magnificent view over Old City consists of bedroom and living room. Mini suites are overlooking Fountain square.
Many visitors note that Hotel tends to cater more for British guests (thanks to BP oil workers). Strangely enough three pin square electrical sockets are everywhere as in UK - so for all the Europeans from continent ... bring your plug converters.
The hotel has 4 stars, but it is clearly overrated and not at all according to the hotel services although for the price you pay it is probably as good as it gets in Baku. The credit card terminal never seems to work so cash is only method of payment. The hotel automatically tacks on an additional 18% VAT for using a credit card.
Overall, one of the less expensive hotels in Baku in a very good location. Don't expect much in terms of service although the staff is friendly and is helpful. Azcot Hotel offers comfortable, value-for-money accommodation for both travelers on a budget and corporate guests looking for a competitively-priced room in the very heart of Baku.
