You will visit Ateshgah - the Fire Worshippers' Temple located in the village of Surakhany. It was built on land where natural gas burned eternally by Zoroastrian believers who travelled from the province of Multan in India to worship. These ancient fires are believed to have given Azerbaijan its name, which is thought by some researchers to mean the 'Land of Fires'.
Nardaran is a settlement and municipality on the Absheron Peninsula in Baku. It has a population of 8,300. Located 25 kilometers north of central Baku, it is politically part of the Baku city-subdivision and treated as a suburb. Unlike the rest of the country, which is considered religiously progressive, Nardaran is a center of conservative Islam in Azerbaijan. Nardaran's name come from Persian: Nar (Pomegranate) + Daran (trees) "Place with Pomegranate trees". The town is the site of an early-14th century castle, featuring a round tower approximately 12.5 meters high. During Soviet rule, the city was known as a center growing flowers. Since Azerbaijan's independence, the economy has dwindled and the town is reputed for its caviar poachers. Nardaran's streets display religious banners and most women wear chadors in public. The town is home to a madrassah as well as the Rehime Khanim Mosque, a large Shia mosque built in the late 1990s over the tomb of Rahima Khanim, the sister of Imam Reza.
Next on our agenda is the Ziyaretgah Mosque in Shuvelan, which is a recently built mosque and shrine. The shrine inside is very beautiful, with worshipers walking around a silver cage which protects a holy shrine, kissing it as they circle around it for luck.
After finishing this part of the tour we’ll drive back to Baku paying the visits on our way back to Taza Pir Mosque, Russian Orthodox Church of Michael the Archangel of the The Church of the Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception and Church of the Saviour better known as German kirkha.
On the entrance to Baku pay a visit to a famous Bibi Heybat Mosque. The existing structure, built in the 1990s, is a recreation of the mosque with the same name built in the 13th century by Shirvanshah Farrukhzad II Ibn Ahsitan II, which was completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1936.
The Bibi-Heybat Mosque includes the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum (a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad), and today is the spiritual center for the Muslims of the region and one of the major monuments of Islamic architecture in Azerbaijan. It's locally known as "the mosque of Fatima" which Alexandre Dumas using the same name, described the mosque during his visit in the 1840s.
After that you will be taken to Martyr's Cemetery, located on the higher slopes of the city's west-end, this is the best place for panorama viewing of the city and the Bay of Baku.
